Somnath, on the coast of Gujarat, is traditionally counted first among the twelve Jyotirlingas, the places where Lord Shiva is worshipped as a column of light.

The legend

According to tradition, the Moon god worshipped Shiva here to be freed from a curse, and the temple takes its name, Somnath, the Lord of Soma, from him.

A temple rebuilt

The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt many times through history. Its rebuilding has made it a symbol of faith that endures.

Planning a visit

Somnath is close to Veraval in Gujarat. The evening aarti by the sea is a highlight for most pilgrims.
