Sankranti marks the sun's movement into Makara rashi and the end of the harvest. In the Telugu states it is celebrated over four days.

Bhogi

The first day begins with a bonfire before dawn, into which old things are offered: a symbol of letting go. Children are blessed with bhogi pallu in the evening.

Sankranti

The main day. Homes are decorated with large kolams, new clothes are worn, and families offer the new harvest to the Sun with pongal.

Kanuma

A day of gratitude to cattle, who are bathed, decorated and worshipped for their part in the harvest.

Mukkanuma

The final day, often a quiet family day before life returns to its routine.
